Invented in 1898 by Josef Manner I, the Mannerschnitte has not changed its format or its basic recipe in over 125 years.
Five layers of wafer, four layers of hazelnut cocoa cream, a size that fits a pocket, a wrapper that has kept it crisp since the 1960s. It travels well, requires nothing, and suits almost any occasion: the concert bag, the picnic basket, the cinema, the camping trip, the unexpected guest arriving just as the biscuit tin runs out.
It is sweet enough to feel like a treat and light enough to eat without ceremony, alone or shared, at a table or standing at a train platform. One of Austria's most beloved souvenirs, it has been carried home in bags and suitcases for generations.
The Mannerschnitte did not become a classic by trying to be one. It became one by being consistently, unfussily itself.
